What is the Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is a holistic remedial, complementary therapy. At some time or another we all must have used the phrase “Kiss it Better”. There is more truth in this phrase than you can imagine, and it is a phrase that could well be applied to this simple, gentle and very effective form of therapy. It has long been thought that the brain will
respond more readily to a soft touch than a heavy one, and it is by capitalising on this that Bowen works.

There is no hard tissue manipulation, adjustments or high velocity movements involved, no massage or use of oils and no equipment used. In short it is unlike any other therapy you will have experienced. Moreover, because it is so gentle and subtle, it can be used on anyone, from babies to the elderly and infirm. No pain should be experienced, just complete simplicity and effectiveness.

How does it work?

The therapist uses thumbs and fingers to make rolling type moves over
muscles, tendons and soft tissue at very precise points around the body. This ‘disturbance’ alerts the brain to reorder and promote self-healing. The practitioner provides the stimulus that allows the brain to become the therapist. Periodically the client will be allowed rest to give the body time to absorb the signals it has just experienced, to make adjustments, release tension and so ease pain and start the
healing process.
